Upper Primary

Primary 4 to 6

ENGLISH

At the upper primary level, students are required to demonstrate mastery of grammar rules, an acquisition of varied vocabulary used suitably, higher level critical thinking and analytical skills along with drawing conclusions based on their general knowledge. As such, we not only equip them with the necessary content knowledge needed but also skills and strategies needed to ace their examinations. Incorporating the SAIL approach, your child will be equipped with the following skill sets:

  • Result-focused, exam-smart strategies
  • Critical thinking and answering skills for comprehension
  • Expansion of vocabulary (spoken and written)
  • Mastery of PSLE-tested grammar rules
  • Expansion of vocabulary (spoken and written)
  • Exposure to general knowledge and current affairs that will give them an edge in the exams
  • Coverage on the Oral and Paper 2 (comprehension, grammar, vocabulary components)

*Writing will be covered in Primary 4 and 5 classes but not in the Primary 6 English classes*

Upper Primary : Writing

Primary 5 to 6

ENGLISH WRITING

At the upper primary level, writing often is the bugbear of many students. How should they write with creativity and flair while keeping in mind the need to score? Often, students with a weak language foundation face challenges in writing because the task itself appears daunting to them. The Primary 5 and 6 Writing class, a signature programme of The Right Word, has been planned to help students find writing an enjoyable and enriching task while helping them see immense improvement in an area they might have previously found intimidating. Similar to the English programme, we not only equip them with the necessary content knowledge needed but also skills and strategies needed to ace their examinations. Incorporating the SAIL approach, your child will be equipped with the following skill sets:

  • Result-focused, exam-smart strategies
  • Exposure to various writing styles
  • Expansion of vocabulary and ability to express stories using figurative language
  • Acquisition of story-writing techniques to present eloquence and invoke captivation in writing
  • Exposure to general knowledge and current affairs that will give them an edge in the exams
  • Coverage on both components of Paper 1- Situational Writing and Continuous Writing

Lower Secondary

Secondary 1 to 2

ENGLISH

As your child continues his/her academic progression, English mastery takes on a whole new level. Not only are higher level critical thinking skills required but also, proficiency in the language and exposure to current affairs. In the lower secondary classes, we beef up the students with content knowledge, an arsenal of wide vocabulary and strategic skill sets necessary for tackling both English Language and Literature.   • Enhanced critical thinking and answering skills to ace Comprehension open-ended components
  • Mastery of answering skills for the Comprehension open-ended component
  • Mastery of writing skills incorporating write-to-score techniques
  • Mastery of literary skills with know-how on literary devices and annotation skills
  • Coverage on both components of Paper 1 and 2- Editing, Continuous Writing, Situational Writing, Visual text, Comprehension, Narrative Text Comprehension, Informative Text Comprehension
  • Coverage on literary components- Literary text analysis, Poem analysis

*Integrated Programme (IP) students who take Language Arts are welcome to join in the Lower Secondary English programme as we do have IP students with us who benefit from the skill sets taught in class.*

O LEVEL ENGLISH

Students preparing for the O Levels must be equipped with the ability to express themselves in language that is concise yet impactful. At the same time, they must have the ability to comprehend advanced texts. In the upper secondary classes, we focus on getting students exam ready through paying attention to their ability to write eloquently, comprehend complex texts, developing answers that would help them score while boosting their confidence and interest in the language.
