I have always been inclined towards the languages for as long as I could remember. Yet, like many of my contemporaries at a major crossroad in their lives, I chose the ostensible certainty of science over the fuzzy intricacies of language. Pragmatism prevailed and I distanced myself from the arts, believing that it would close many doors for me later in life. While the years spent learning science and conducting research certainly shaped my perspectives, there was always a vestige of “what could have been”, a faint, lingering song that beckoned for one to find his tribe. Heeding the call, I returned to my roots in theatre and rhetorical arts. This period proved to be a pivotal point and despite being halfway through a rigorous programme in my field, I made the switch to teaching media literacy courses in Secondary schools. The interactions with them made me realise that there were many creative young minds with the desire to learn. Beyond that, they needed to find that balance between meeting their academic expectations and finding a creative space to express themselves. In the classroom, I have truly experienced what it means when people say that teaching is both an art and a science. Teaching English, in particular, bears out this truth. I try to imbue my classes with these two elements – the science of argumentation and the art of literary flair. We often talk about the workplace of tomorrow, but recent global developments mean that tomorrow is already here. English — the medium with which we think cogently, write fluidly and speak persuasively — remains evergreen even as the hard skills needed to thrive in the global landscape evolve over time. Teaching came as an unplanned move in my life journey. It had never occurred to me that I would be a teacher one day. But I am glad this diversion happened as it has brought me onto a path of self-discovery and self-actualisation. I gave private tuition as a means of supplementing my income after I left my first career in the SAF. I did so while I was trying to strike it out in the financial services industry. I started off with tutoring a handful of primary and secondary school students. Have you ever felt a wee bit of satisfaction and accomplishment after helping someone? I certainly do every time my students have that radiant glow on their faces, like they have been enlightened after I help them understand concepts that they previously did not comprehend. That made me see the meaning in teaching — igniting young minds. I decided to make the switch into teaching and thus started off as a contract teacher in my alma mater. There, I taught my form class English, Mathematics and Science. The enthusiastic looks on my students’ faces at the start of every school day energised and spurred me on. To satisfy their insatiable thirst for knowledge, I would come up with my own teaching materials — interactive presentations, learning manipulatives, relevant video clips — to supplement the course books and activity books which were part of their curriculum. I also learnt that the malleable young minds of children have no boundaries and are always accepting of new information and knowledge that teachers are willing to impart to them. Their minds only become constrained and restrained when adults do not allow children to explore possibilities which would otherwise become impossibilities. As such, children should not be put down directly but encouraged to learn through exploration, mistakes and sharing. My interaction with the young minds coupled with my education at NIE also made me realise that different children learn through different means. Some can learn just by being instructed, while many learn through understanding the relevancy of what they are taught. Some can only internalise knowledge through kinaesthetic means. This has led me to modify my teaching methods beyond the typical instructional chalk-and-talk way, but also through collaborative learning strategies (peer-to-peer) and practical experiments. Learning then becomes authentic and relevant. Specialising in the primary school English syllabus, I have utilised a decade’s worth of teaching knowledge and experience into my pedagogy. I facilitate the learning of language with a strong emphasis on the basic fundamentals of grammar and vocabulary. I believe grammar is the law of the language which governs the use of it. Vocabulary is the weaponry that allows us to comprehend the world and express ourselves effectively. Subsequently, through authentic experiences and practical reinforcements during my lessons, like reading the news on current affairs, speeches, plays and drama, my students appreciate the importance and relevancy of using standard English in their everyday lives. With a better grasp of the language, students can then do better in the different components of the English paper in examinations that the rigorous Singapore education system demands. A student with the needed linguistic capability can write better, understand passages better, answer questions better and eventually score better. Although drilling in the different examinable components may bring about short-term improvements, I believe language is an art that has to be developed gradually and conscientiously. Therefore, my challenge in education is to balance the expectations parents have while instilling a love of the English language in the children. It is because only when the latter is present, will students become active learners and users of standard English. Prior to the days in which I had the privilege of tasting gourmet food and drinking fine wine for a living, I worked in numerous kitchens both as a wait staff and as a cook and wrote for several publications as a journalist since I was a mass communication graduate and journalism major. I also dabbled in photography and often wielded both camera and pen, doubling as a photographer and journalist. Yet, all these exciting endeavours left me unsatisfied. To be honest, I was rather lost… until I decided to teach. I started out teaching my first official batch of students circa 2010 and like all new experiences, it was slightly scary, extremely demanding and certainly unfamiliar territory. Armed with a sense of conviction and purpose, I went with what I felt would be best for students as if they were my friends and my own children. Well, not only did that work some magic, it also cemented the realisation that teaching is my calling. In 2012, I wrote my first (but certainly not the last) academic guide- “Score the A\* You Deserve in PSLE Writing” with the purpose of sharing my favourite form of expression. I may not be a journalist now but I really do enjoy expressing myself in written word, other than presenting the world to my beloved students through the pleasure of meeting them for our weekly sessions and with a signature oratory flamboyance that I get pretty drunk on. Yet another year of teaching flew past as my son became one year old and I found myself setting up an English specialist centre in the heart of Upper Thomson Road. Now, things seem to be moving on at the speed of light, particularly with the fast-paced syllabus in Singapore. I must say that I’m enjoying the ride and the desire to reach out to students– instilling them with a hunger for curiosity and a zest for life, inculcating them with a strong foundation in personal values and igniting young minds– has never been stronger. I’ve also found a passion for research in education, leading to my completion of a Master of Arts in Teaching English to Young Learners. Back to the question aforementioned– “Why do you want to teach when you can enjoy the luxury of having good food and wine for free every day?”What could be more luxurious than the joy of engaging and touching youths, knowing that they’ve been kindled with a sense of zeal and fervour to become people of greatness? People who will love this world as it has loved them and people who will go on to spread the spirit of learning and sharing among others. There is nothing more I love than to spread the perpetual yearning for knowledge and to have the honour of engaging in compelling conversations with cohorts of youths whom I regard as my life-long friends. A graduate in Mass Communications and a former Food and Wine Journalist for several publications, Adeline was searching for an endeavour to sate the need for fulfilment. That’s when she started to teach. Shortly after, she authored the local bestseller “Score the A\* You Deserve in PSLE Writing”. It was then that Adeline realised her inherent flair for writing and love for teaching helped change the lives of the many students who sought after her classes. A hunger to lead a team of professional and passionate teachers led to the founding of The Right Word. With the completion of her Masters in Teaching English to Young Learners, Adeline has refined both theory and practice to conceive The Right Word’s pedagogy – The SAIL Approach. Teaching was an unplanned move for this former SAF-turned-Financial-Services-professional who found his calling when he was a school teacher with the National Institute of Education (NIE). Thereafter, Kelvin was a private tutor to a handful of students. The success of his students and demand for his classes led to the switch in teaching group classes. His commitment to ensuring students experience significant grade jumps is what attracts parents to enrol all their children with him. A firm believer of inspiring students to go beyond their perceived potential, Kelvin is a devoted educator who continually refines his craft. With close to a decade of teaching experience, Alvin has found teaching English a particularly fulfilling profession.
